Pump Out Plugs

The Pump Out Plug is a temporary tubing plug. It allows the tubing to be pressured up for setting a device such as a packer. After required pressure has been reached, the brass screws shear, expelling the core downward out of the tubing. Full Bore ID is realized once shearing has occurred.

Pump Out Plugs are available in different materials, styles and threads. A solid core version is shown. Simply install the o-ring, lightly grease, slide open end of body. Then install shear screws in the threaded holes. Tighten securely to prevent backing off while running downhole. Lightly crimping the screw shoulders gives an extra assurance against the screws backing off, but can affect reuse of the body.

Alternatively, a ball and seating core can be used instead of a solid core, allowing for upward fluid flow while running in downhole. Once in place, the ball will set against the core, allowing the tubing to be pressured up for device setting purposes.

Shearing pressure is a function of the number of shear screws used and may be changed by using fewer screws.
